Two Professional Whitening Options
- Whitening in one visit: in-office whitening (Zoom!) using a hydrogen peroxide gel activated by a special light to lighten stains in a single appointment.
- Internal bleaching: treatment done tooth by tooth for teeth that have darkened from the inside, for example after an injury or root canal.
How In-Office Whitening Works
Your lips and gums are protected, the whitening gel is applied to your teeth and activated with the light in short intervals. The shade of your teeth is recorded before and after treatment so you can see the difference.
Internal Bleaching for a Dark Tooth
If a single tooth is dark from the inside, the dentist first evaluates its condition. When needed, root canal treatment or retreatment is completed beforehand. The whitening agent is then placed inside the tooth and renewed weekly until the desired shade is reached, and the tooth is sealed with a tooth-colored resin.
Is Whitening Right for You?
Whitening works on natural tooth enamel; crowns, veneers and fillings do not change color. Your dentist will check your teeth and gums first and explain what results to expect.
Teeth whitening — frequently asked questions
How long does in-office whitening take?
In-office whitening is completed in a single visit. Your dentist will tell you how long your appointment will last.
Will whitening make my teeth sensitive?
Some patients feel temporary sensitivity. Let the team know if you have sensitive teeth so they can recommend the best approach.
Can whitening change the color of crowns or fillings?
No. Whitening works on natural teeth; existing crowns, veneers and fillings keep their color.
